About us
The Multicultural Music Group is a non-profit organization established in 1996 as a response to the need for multicultural music in the NYC symphonic repetoire.
Why MMG?
The United States and many countries around the world are rich in diversity. We celebrate this diversity through language, culture, food, and of course, music. MMG provides music instruction, professional development, and multicultural performances and scholarly research to supplement our performances.
At Multicultural Music Group (MMG), we aim to diversify our musical repertoire to reflect the rich diversity of our communities. We view it as our responsibility to examine and discuss what unites us as a country and global village.
The presentation and creation of multicultural music for orchestra and chamber ensembles is uncommon and rarely promoted by established symphonic organizations. MMG remedies this oversight by featuring and commissioning musicians of color. MMG is dedicated to national educational reform by providing multicultural music education to communities across New York City. We support schools by implementing more diverse music instruction to reflect the diversity of our city.
Our Mission
The Multicultural Music Group, Inc. (MMG) is a non-profit established in 1996 with a mission to present history through music. We commission and present integrated arts/humanities performances by living composers, scholars and musicians of color, and large and small ensembles led by Afro-Indigenous people. We provide after school music training to students, ages 11 to 18. MMG serves economically-marginalized communities in four NYC boroughs to advance social justice and global understanding, and to promote diversity in orchestral repertoire.
