This concert brings to life the story of Mariquita and Encarnación, two enslaved Afro-Uruguayan women who killed their enslaver in 1821 after enduring brutal mistreatment. Through an original musical composition by Sebastián Natal, their lives and resistance will be remembered and reimagined. A panel discussion will explore Black Uruguay, the history of slavery in South America, and the enduring struggles for freedom and racial justice. Together, music and dialogue will reclaim Mariquita's and Encarnación's place in Uruguay’s history and honor the legacy of Afro-descendant resistance in all of the Americas.
